I trained at Bedford College of Physical Education, which is now part of the University of Bedfordshire, and graduated in 1984 with a B.Ed. honours degree in Human Movement Studies. Val Sabin, who is well known for her PE teaching manuals and courses, also trained at Bedford and we share much pedagogy, particularly in Educational Gymnastics.
I firstly spent 15 years teaching in secondary comprehensive schools in Northamptonshire. Returning to my roots in The North, I taught PE at Upper Wharfedale School in rural North Yorkshire where we linked with very small primary schools. Next I spent two years in the independent sector at Bradford Girls Grammar School and I was inspired by the high profile given to PE and sport and the specialist teaching provided in their junior school. This propelled me into primary education.
In 2001 I took up a class teaching post at Eldwick Primary School near Bradford. The school was keen to use my PE expertise and I combined classroom teaching with running an extensive school sport programme. The school was awarded School Games Mark Gold from 2015 to 2019. Since 2013 the Primary School Sport Premium has funded me to work alongside class teachers and HLTAs to inspire and support their PE teaching. I also delivered ITT in PE within the Bradford Birth-to-19 SCITT and supported students on practice at Eldwick to develop their PE teaching skills.
In 2020 I decided to leave teaching in order to give myself more time to develop Primary PE Resources. I keep in touch with current practice in education, and continue to teach PE, by working part time as a teaching assistant near my new home in Clitheroe, Lancashire.
I have enjoyed a life full of physical activity. Until recently I competed in all kinds of running: fell, cross-country, trail and road races. I now cycle regularly, run for fitness and also swim. More recently, I have started to practice yoga.
Being physically literate has given me a lifetime of pleasure in sport and physical activity and I am passionate about ensuring all children have that same opportunity.
